I’m William Westmancott: Member of ‘The Guild of Mastercraftsmen’ and one of the youngest fully trained Savile Row craftsmen practicing today. I have worked in some of Savile Row’s most revered houses and cut for both foreign and British Royalty as well as some of the world’s most famous and influential gentlemen.
My Philosophy for your Tailoring.
During my time spent learning my craft on Savile Row, I had the benefit of working with some of the most incredible craftsmen ever to have worked there.
A few of these greats were well into their 80s when I first met them, the man who taught me to sew, Henry O’Connell, had been tailoring since childhood. He was a third generation tailor and made his first suit at the age of 8; he had been tailoring for over 76 years when I met him.
One of the things I learnt from these veteran craftsmen was that the Savile Row of today is very different from the Savile Row they came to in their youth.
What do I mean by this?
Well, in that time, ready to wear had not made its big impact and practically everyone wore clothing made for them.
There were many thousands of tailors working across the country and Savile Row attracted the very best of the best. Competition for work was immense and only jacket and trouser makers with incredible skill and who went the extra mile were able to get work.
Today, good jacket and trouser makers are scarce, their work is in demand and much of the work that is accepted by many tailoring houses today simply would not have made the grade back then.
My aim is to bring back the highest levels of craftsmanship such as those Henry O’Connell would have replicated day after day.
Savile Row as a whole has been trying to compete, as well as it can, with rapidly decreasing clothing prices and a general shift in most peoples perceptions of the true value of the clothes we wear.
In the 50s, a Savile Row suit would have cost you the equivalent of a house.
A Savile Row suit was a luxury only the very wealthiest could afford and the service and quality of the garments they received were impeccable. Sadly, many of the craftsmen I learnt from are no longer with us, but their skills and integrity live on in the dedicated team of craftsmen and women that is ‘William Westmancott’.
My promise to you.
I promise to make you the most beautiful clothing you will ever own.
If you are not absolutely delighted with the clothes I make for you; if you do not adore your new clothing; if there is anything you do not love about the clothes I have made for you…
I will give you your money back.
